Un nuevo metaestudio del laboratorio de investigaci\u00f3n Hydra Marine Science<\/a>s concluy\u00f3 que la hidr\u00f3lisis del \u00e1cido polil\u00e1ctico<\/strong> (PLA) evita la formaci\u00f3n de micropl\u00e1sticos<\/strong> persistentes.<\/p>\n

El reporte realiz\u00f3 una revisi\u00f3n inicial de m\u00e1s de 30 mil informes relacionados con la degradaci\u00f3n del PLA<\/strong>. De este n\u00famero, Hydra identific\u00f3 500 como relevantes y de calidad suficiente para una revisi\u00f3n m\u00e1s profunda.<\/p>\n

El metaestudio solo consider\u00f3 el PLA puro, pero no art\u00edculos o productos espec\u00edficos hechos de o con PLA en los que el pol\u00edmero base pueda haber sufrido tratamientos y modificaciones adicionales.<\/p>\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 es el pl\u00e1stico PLA?<\/h2>\n

El pl\u00e1stico PLA (\u00e1cido polil\u00e1ctico)<\/strong> es un biopl\u00e1stico<\/strong> que se produce a partir de recursos renovables como el almid\u00f3n de ma\u00edz o la ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar. Se trata de un material pl\u00e1stico renovable y biodegradable bajo ciertas condiciones de temperatura y humedad.<\/p>\n

Actualmente se usa como una alternativa para producir envases, bl\u00edsters o tarrinas y otras soluciones.<\/p>\n

El PLA no genera micropl\u00e1sticos<\/h3>\n

El estudio investig\u00f3 cu\u00e1l es el destino del PLA en el entorno abierto y evalu\u00f3 con qu\u00e9 rapidez y en qu\u00e9 medida se degrada el PLA en ambientes abiertos y si se forman micropl\u00e1sticos persistentes.<\/p>\n

Los autores se\u00f1alaron que la aparici\u00f3n de micropl\u00e1sticos PLA<\/strong> en la naturaleza se ha informado \u00abs\u00f3lo unas pocas veces\u00bb a partir de muestras ambientales. Tambi\u00e9n reportaron que varios experimentos de campo a corto plazo y pruebas de laboratorio durante varios meses concluyeron que el PLA no se biodegrada en el ambiente abierto.<\/p>\n

El estudio se\u00f1ala que \u00abla mayor\u00eda de estos estudios parecen descuidar o no ser conscientes del hecho de que la degradaci\u00f3n molecular del PLA por hidr\u00f3lisis<\/strong> es un proceso de erosi\u00f3n en masa, que durante un tiempo inicial m\u00e1s largo no se puede medir como p\u00e9rdida de masa sino s\u00f3lo como una disminuci\u00f3n del peso molecular hasta que los fragmentos moleculares sean lo suficientemente peque\u00f1os como para volverse solubles y difundirse fuera de la matriz polim\u00e9rica\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hidrolisis, clave para la degradaci\u00f3n del PLA<\/h3>\n

La hidr\u00f3lisis es un proceso abi\u00f3tico que ocurre en presencia de humedad. El estudio encontr\u00f3 que mientras prevalezcan estas condiciones, el peso molecular y el tama\u00f1o de cualquier objeto o fragmento de PLA disminuir\u00e1n continuamente<\/strong> mediante hidr\u00f3lisis, a un ritmo determinado por la temperatura, hasta que las cadenas de pol\u00edmero<\/strong> sean tan cortas que el material eventualmente se vuelva soluble en agua. Estas sustancias solubles, olig\u00f3meros y mon\u00f3meros de \u00e1cido l\u00e1ctico, ser\u00e1n posteriormente biodegradadas por microorganismos en biomasa, agua y di\u00f3xido de carbono.<\/p>\n

\u00abEl metaestudio muestra que, a diferencia del pl\u00e1stico no biodegradable<\/strong>, que persistir\u00e1 y se acumular\u00e1 permanentemente como micro y nanopl\u00e1sticos en el medio ambiente, el PLA en el medio ambiente no dejar\u00e1 una contaminaci\u00f3n persistente mientras haya humedad y agua\u00bb, dijo Christian Lott<\/strong>, director general de Hydra Marine Sciences.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSin embargo, debemos ser conscientes de que no pertenece al medio ambiente y es fundamental que no utilicemos estos atributos para fomentar la basura o frenar el desarrollo de la infraestructura mundial de residuos.
